IDA-71 Internal Layout

OK, she's open! On the top is the counterlung, with the twin scrubbers laying under that. On the right is the 02 bottle, and the open area across the bottom held a radio for parachuting operations. Let's dig in!

Starting at the top: The counterlung is made from a heavy rubber-lined cloth bag. The material is very soft, and has good characteristics of breathing. Volume is not known, but is more than adequate. Construction is glued and taped seams, and repairs may be done with ease, using any suitable material and contact-cement.

Counterlung connections to the scrubbers is made with these chrome-plated brass connectors. Tightening them securely is done with the spanner provided in a bracket inside the top cover.

This is the block to which the 02 supply hose is attached, as well as the connection for the offboard Nitrox cylinder.

This is the feed that brings gas to the auto-add valve. The line runs through the counterlung and to the internal connection to the add valve. Center scrubber connection is at the left.

Right in the middle of the rig runs the purge-line. This is the line through which the offboard nitrox bottle purges the loop when the automatic switch to and from Nitrox is made at about  40 feet. The method of operation of this system is well described in the offboard Nitrox cylinder page.

With the rig stripped of all components save for the counterlung, the piping and brackets are easy to observe.

There is not a lot to see inside the rig once the scrubbers and cylinder are removed, and those components are described separately. Return to the main IDA-71 page and continue the tour!
