IDA-71 Cylinder & Regulator

The IDA-71 cylinder and regulator is a simple assembly consisting of an Inconel 1-liter cylinder rated to 200 BAR, with an attached intermediate pressure regulator supplying about 140 PSIG to the rig. Seen here is the cylinder assembly, with the pressure gauge, rig supply-hose, and integral on/off valve.

The regulator is the same one used in almost all Russian diving applications. It is a simple diaphragm type, and is unbalanced. The intermediate pressure may be adjusted with the screw-slot shown here. The on/off valve is integrated with the first stage, and the first stage is not removable from the cylinder.

The first stage is provided with an overpressure relief valve, to prevent a blown-hose should the high-pressure seat fail. The chained cap behind the overpressure relief is the filler port. Note the threads on the periphery of the regulator casting: A simple cap converts this regulator to a non-compensated one for use in other applications as a Constant Mass Flow system. Such dual-use engineering is typical of Russian designs.

The cylinder itself is a wire-wound, epoxy-coated Inconel cylinder. This exotic metal was chosen for its strength and non-magnetic properties. The neck-thread is a standard Metric thread, as found on several other size European cylinders.

The entire cylinder assembly is of high quality, and has proven to be robust and reliable in service.
